Industry Profile - With franchising a lack of industry experience is no barrier to entry

In most career changes, one of the first questions asked by potential employers or partners is about previous experience. Having no experience, is often the quickest route to finding doors closed in your desired path.

However, franchising turns this on its head.  Yes, you need to be well suited to a business sector and the role of the franchise owner, and of course you need to have the desired level of interest in that business sector to want to start a franchise with perhaps a minimum 5 or 10-year commitment through the franchise agreement.

Suitability and desire aside, you need not necessarily have the direct experience in that industry sector to succeed, as a franchisor will empower you with all the training and support you need to be successful.

And if you doubt this, then ask yourself this: If you built your own successful business brand and franchised it out to grow the business further, would you let unsuitable, inadequately trained individuals promote and present your brandm your business, and risk damaging it?  ....No, you wouldnt, simple as that!

Of course, some franchises will require industry experience, especially if is one where qualifications are required in order to trade, but this represents the minority.

Some franchisors even prefer that you do not have any industry experience.

For example within the Property sector, many franchisors prefer you not to have any previous experience they want to train you from scratch, without techniques or bad habits that may prevent you from following their 'proven business system'.  In essence, its easier to start with a 'blank canvas'.

Franchisors will ensure that you are fully trained and suitable for their brand. Your dream business therefore may not be as far from reach as you first thought.

You will find that with most Management Franchises that experience of the industry is not necessary. It would be helpful to have a knowledge and understanding of and franchisors will assess your suitability to business and industry.  As a franchise owner you will be responsible for managing the business why your experienced support staff carry out the job. However there is always an opportunity for you to roll up your sleeves and muck in if you want to!
